Climate Lectures at TU Berlin

The Mercator Climate Lecture 2016 seeks to offer new insights into and inform public discourse on the complicated and dynamic interaction between climate change and such international political priorities as sustainable development, economic growth and social equality. The Mercator Climate Lecture 2016 is funded by Stiftung Mercator and organized by the TU Berlin. The Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research leads its development in form and content.

The Climate Lecture format was first announced by former TU Berlin president Prof. Dr. Kutzler during the inauguration of Prof. Dr. Edenhofer as Professor for Climate Change Economics in 2008 and was originally organized as an event series by the TU Berlin in cooperation with PIK and Vattenfall Europe AG until 2012. Following the invitation of Prof. Dr. Edenhofer, Lord Nicholas Stern held the first lecture in front of a crowded Auditorium Maximum at the TUB (Climate Lecture 2009). Since then, Climate Lectures have been given by Nobel Memorial Price in Economics recipient Elinor Ostrom, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, and ecological economist and author Tim Jackson.

As a cooperation between the Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Stiftung Mercator and the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), the new format aims to provide new impulses to the public debate on climate change and sustainability.
