Media Information No. 219/2017

Academic Senate unanimous in calling for open access to research publications and data

At its meeting on 6 December 2017, TU Berlin's Academic Senate unanimously adopted the TU Berlin Open Access Policy. The policy strengthens the university's commitment to Open Access to research publications and data and presents recommendations for TU members on Open Access publishing.  With the signing of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities back in August 2016, TU Berlin confirmed Open Access as one of its strategic goals. The aim is to make scientific and research publications and findings freely available to everyone around the globe.

TU Berlin's Open Access Policy follows in the footsteps of the State of Berlin's Open Access Strategy adopted in 2015. The policy contains eight recommendations for TU members as well as commitments on the part of the university. For example, TU Berlin recommends that its members initially publish their work Open Access under a free license and exercise their "secondary exploitation right", i.e. self-archive all articles in repositories, either at the same time as the initial publication or after set period of time.

To support TU members in Open Access publishing, the University Library has led efforts in recent years to develop and expand a range of services. These include the University Press, the Self-Archiving Service, the Publication Fund and the Repository for research data and publications.
