Technische Universität Berlin is awarding Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Peter D. Eisenman an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding academic services to the theory and philosophy of architecture.

Peter Eisenman, professor at Yale School of Architecture, is one of the most influential architectural personalities of our time. Eisenman is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1967, Eisenman founded the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS), an international think tank for the theory and philosophy of modernism. With his early writings and designs, Eisenman laid the foundations for the theory of process-oriented, computer-based architecture, which has changed the built environment since the 1990’s - not only technologically and aesthetically, but also from a social-cultural perspective. Eisenman became world famous through the debates surrounding his project in Berlin for the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

In the 1980’s, and in close contact with the philosophers and artists of his time, Eisenman developed the philosophical-theoretical principles of architectural deconstruction, which initiated the transition from postmodern aesthetics to a computer-aided architectural practice. Among his many achievements, Eisenman developed architectural discourse and design as an instrument of analytical-critical reflection, through which architecture became a theoretical model beyond the singularity of the object. Thus, Eisenman valorized architecture to a humanist and universal science, reconnecting it to the scientific tradition of the Renaissance.
